Special Diabetic Care Information for Juvenile & Type 2 Moms to beJuvenile Diabetic PregnanciesYou should find that your insulin requirements go up whilst you are pregnant, especially during the last trimester, this is entirely normal and you should find they will come back down to normal once the baby is born. It is important to make a note of your pre-pregnancy insulin dose levels, so you can quickly go straight back to them after the birth. You should be offered tests on your eyes and kidney function and during your pregnancy you should be much more closely monitored than a non diabetic, to check you are achieving good glucose control. Type 2 PregnanciesIf you are taking oral medication to control your diabetes, you must change to insulin. You will be able to switch back to oral treatment as soon as the baby is born. If you are overweight or obese and are planning a baby, you should try to lose weight, as with greater weight, you increase your chance of high blood pressure. Target Blood Glucose levelsStudies have shown a strong link between good blood glucose control and a reduction in birth defects and other diabetic pregnancy related problems. The closer you can get to near normal blood glucose levels the better. The readings you get after eating are equally important as the pre-meal readings. Some people believe that good control in the first trimester in particular is vital to reducing the risk of birth defects, because the foetus's vital organs are still forming. In the later stages, higher glucose levels are said to lead to a larger baby, rather than birth defects. Even though the effects on the foetus are different at diffferent stages, it is important to have good control throughout a pregnancy.
