Hyperglycemia, Recognising and Avoiding this Dangerous Diabetes ConditionHyperglycemia Syndrome "Hyper"A Hyper is essentially the opposite of a Hypo , i.e. it is a very high glucose level. A true Hyper should not be confused with raised glucose levels after a meal or other short term effect. A real Hyper is very high glucose level for days if not weeks. As such, if you monitor yourself regularly, e.g. before every meal and before bedtime, you should never suffer Hyperosmolar Syndrome (the alternative name for Hyperglycemia). Treating Hyperglycemia is not a task a non-professional can do, so an immediate hospital visit is required. The doctors will seek to re-hydrate you and lower your glucose levels to normal as quickly as possible. For the elderly this can be a very dangerous condition, which is why if they are unable to monitor themselves, they MUST have close supervision and monitoring.
