Prevention Tips and Treatment Advice on Diabetic Eye Disease

There are lots of stories about how diabetics can often go blind later in life. What you must remember is that when today's elderly diabetic population were first diagnosed, the level of knowledge and treatments available were far more limited. Today we know largely how to prevent diabetic blindness.

Get Checked

You must get your eyes checked regularly, at least once a year. Some systems will take a photograph of your retina, which then makes it easier to make a comparision later on to another photograph. Some hospitals will simply do annual checks. There are various tell tale signs that an ophthalmologist will look for. If you don't get check up regularly and you have diabetic retinopathy, there is a high chance you will lose some vision.

Other problems your ophthalmologist will check for are Glaucoma and Cataracts. Glaucoma is caused by increased pressure on the optic nerve in the eye. Cataracts are areas that are opaque on the lens that block your vision in these areas.

Treatment

As previously stated many times, good blood glucose control is the key. Glaucoma and cataracts occur in the non-diabetic population, so everyone is at risk although diabetics face a slightly higher risk. Medication for Glaucoma can lower the damaging pressure on the optic nerve and cataracts can be removed. No drug based treatments exists for Diabetic Retinopathy, prevention is the key. However, laser based treatment has saved many eyes. By keeping your blood glucose level and blood pressure under the best control you can, you can vastly reduce your risk.
