How to Get Started Exercising Safely with DiabetesStarting outSafe exercising is a very complex issue. One person's idea of a light walk is another person's heart attack inducing heavy work out. You should be realistic in assessing your current fitness level. You should also consult with you doctor about your plans. If you have not done any form of exercise for a long time, start out very easily. Walking is a great way to exercise without really trying and if you can walk instead of taking you car, you save the environment and money! A change of attitude to household chore's can really help. For instance, do you get others to fetch things for you, particularly if it involves using the stairs? Thinking of tasks as exercise can transform your life! Take cleaning your car as an example. Washing and drying a car is good exercise and is good for you car, a win win situation! Mowing the lawn, home cooking, cleaning, ironing, home improvements, the list goes on and on of tasks that get you moving gently. If you feel confident walking, a good next step is swimming. In fact if you suffer from discomfort when walking, swimming may be the better option for you. Swimming is fantastic exercise and as a 'low impact' sport, you are less likely to get injured. You should aim to swim gently for longer, rather than as fast as you can for a couple of lengths. Keep a LogOnce you have agreed on an exercise programme (in conjunction with your doctor and possibly your fitness instructor) it is extremely helpful to keep track of your progress. Even if you are not exercising at a gym, it always helps to make a note in a diary of what you have done. Not only does this motivate you to keep exercising regularly, it allows you to see the progress you are making and later to fine tune your program once you are settled down into the routine. Some modern gyms will automatically log the times you do on machines, alternatively just note down the activity, duration and intensity, so in a months time, you can see how much fitter you are!
