The Truth about Being Diagnosed with Diabetes

Coping with the initial diagnosis and onset of Juvenile diabetes is always difficult and is usually extremely traumatic. If you or a loved one are newly diagnosed you may find yourself going through several different stages:

Firstly denial - where you find it very difficult to accept test results or believe you will "get over it". Of course have your test results checked out, but once confirmed you must accept the diagnosis and move on.

Second stage is often anger as you will ask "why me", "its not fair". Anger can spill over and affect those close to you. This is particularly unfortunate as you will need the support of those around you as you come to terms with diabetes and learn to control your glucose levels. Anger must quickly be replaced by acceptance and a willingness to embrace the required treatments and make the necessary changes to your lifestyle and diet. Unfortunately some diabetics remain angry their whole lives, which can lead to increased stress and depression.

Understandably, diabetes and depression can often go together. It is very easy to be worried and depressed about eating the wrong things, not being able to go out and enjoy yourself, having bad control of your blood sugar levels or the possible later medical complications. It is right to be concerned by these things, but at the same time, by following the medical treatments prescribed, having a good diet and also by exercising regularly, juvenile diabetes should not prevent you leading a full and happy life.

It is essential to enlist the help of your family and friends to get them to understand what it is you need from them and how they should react in emergency situations such as hypos. See the complications section for information on Hypos.

Type 1 diabetes IS a nasty condition, but advances are being made all the time with new types of insulins, test meters and even transplants a future possibility. Life was much harder for diabetics previously and complications in later life were common, nowadays, they are much more avoidable.

People with diabetes win Olympic Gold medals, climb mountains, run marathons and have babies . We can't beat diabetes yet, but you can live with it and not let it spoil your life!
