Top Diabetes Tips for Successful Exercise!

Sensible Moderate Exercise

For those who don't get out of breath after quickly climbing a couple of flights of stairs, deciding on a sensible exercise plan is a great idea.

As previously stated, the best form of exercise is aerobic. This means steadily exercising for longer than about 20 minutes. If you really want to pump iron or do some other short but physically intense workout, make sure you test your blood sugar carefully, particularly after you have stopped exercising.

If you want to use exercise to help manage your diabetes, the best advice is:

  • Minimum of 30 minutes steady exercise
  • Build up duration and intensity slowly.
  • At first monitor your blood glucose very closely
  • Eat approximately one hour before exercising
  • Look to reduce your insulin intake before exercise, your glucose levels should drop with your exercise
  • Eat a consistent amount of carbs before you workout
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Do not make sudden changes to your exercise routine
  • Join an aerobic exercise class
  • Sign up for a fun run to give you a target to aim for

Above all, try and do something you enjoy. If exercise is to make a real difference to your health, you should do it at least twice a week. Unless it is enjoyable, it will always be a struggle to motivate yourself.

Get a Dog

For those able to give a good home to a dog, consider getting a family pet. Not only are they reputed to reduce stress, they provide companionship and as they must be walked, they ensure their owners get plenty of fresh air and exercise.
