It is very important to have a realistic and appropriate ideal weight to aim for. This will give you a quick idea of how overweight you are and how much weight you should aim to lose.
So how do you know what your ideal body weight should be? Well, of course it depends largely on your height.
Don't be fooled by people saying they have "big bones", your height is the best guide to your ideal weight. Of course some people do have genuine medical reasons for being overweight and they should seek proper professional advice, for everyone else, here is a quick and easy guide:

Women

  1. Start with 100 pounds
  2. Add 5 pounds for each inch you are taller than 5 feet

For example a 5 foot 6 inch women would be 100 + 6*5 = 130 pounds, or 9 stones 4 pounds.

Men

  1. Start with 106 pounds
  2. Add 6 pounds for each inch you are taller than 5 feet

For example a 5 foot 10 inch man would be 106 + 6*10 = 166 pounds, or 11 stones 12 pounds.

Body Mass Index

Another way to discover your best weight range is to use the Body Mass Index, or BMI. A BMI value of less than 20 is considered under weight, 20 to 25 is the normal range 25 to 30 is overweight with over 30 considered obese. To calculate your BMI you need to know your weight and height. If you are working in pounds and inches use:

  1. Multiply your height in inches by itself
  2. Divide your weight in pounds by the answer you got from the first step
  3. Multiply the answer from step 2 by 703

Example

If your weight is 150 pounds and you are 5 feet 2 (62 inches)

  1. 62inches * 62inches = 3844
  2. 150pounds / 3844 = 0.039
  3. 0.039 * 703 = BMI 27 (slightly overweight)

If you know your Weight in Kilograms and Height in meters use:>

  1. Multiply your height in meters by itself
  2. Divide your weight in kilograms by the answer you got from the first step

Example

If your weight is 72 kilograms and you are 1.7 meters tall

  1. 1.7m * 1.7m = 2.89
  2. 72 / 2.89 = BMI 25 (top end of good BMI range)

BMI is a good guide to use, diabetics should aim to be in the 20 to 25 range if possible.
