What are good cholesterol levels?

Hello,
My father who is 65 years of age has type 2 diabetes. There seems to be conflicting information what a good cholesterol level is for him. Some reports say as low as 70 and as high at 115.
Please advise.

Hello Irene,

Thank you for your question. Cholesterol levels can be confusing as cholesterol comes in two main types:

  • "LDL" (the bad type)
  • "HDL" (the good type)

An HDL level of 60 mg/dL or greater is considered to be protective against heart disease. This is especially important to diabetics who face an increased risk of heart disease, compared to the general population.

For diabetics, current advice is that the LDL level is less than 100 mg/dL. For more information, check out our pages on fat types, which includes cholesterol.
