Animas Insulin Pumps

Animas was founded in 1996 by Katherine Crothall, Ph.D. Animas' innovations have often set the standard for the industry. It began with their first insulin pump, the R1000 which featured many 'firsts', including menu-driven operation, real waterproof status, multiple basal programs and smaller basal increments.
Animas offer pump support, staffed by a team of healthcare professionals who respond to customer needs 24/7.
The company offer extensive training and education to help you get started and also runs a 'Pump Pal'service to try and match new comers to an experienced pump user.

Safety Features

All Animas pumps have a comprehensive range of safety features, including constant cross checking of correct dosage quantities and checking for other failures. Alerts tell the user when insulin is running low and if insulin can't be delivered due to an occlusion. A powerful motor is better able to overcome small occlusions and delivers basal doses every three minutes.

The IR1000 Insulin Pump

The IR1000 is a great entry level pump with all the essential feature:
  • Easy to use and setup thanks to the simple menu software. Several preset basal programs such as 'weekend'or 'weekday', 'well-day', 'sick-day'etc.. are provided to give you the flexibility to change your pump with your lifestyle.
  • The IR1000 will store your settings, even while you change the battery.
  • For the more advanced user, you can connect the pump to a PC and download the data for analysis by you or your care professional.
  • The IR1000 is very practical, being waterpoof with a really secure clip to attach it with
  • It comes in a choice of great colors and styles.

The IR1200 Insulin Pump

The Animas IR1200 builds upon the IR1000, but adds some great new features
  • A much larger display than the IR1000, meaning less scrolling and easier navigation.
  • An onboard carbohydrate calculator helps you keep a better track of your meals.
  • Even with the large display, it is still small, measuring 2.9" x 2.0" x 0.76"
  • Weighs just over 3oz only, including batteries and insulin.

The IR1250 Insulin Pump

The Animas IR1250 is the latest insulin pump from The Animas Corporation
  • Create your own food database of upto 5000 food types.
  • Enter your food and the pump calculates the insulin does for you!
  • Download musical alerts to personalise your pump, or even compose your own tunes!
  • Comprehensive customer support helpline.
  • Store your contact information and your own sick day quick tips.
  • Create your own photo pump cover or choose from a range of colors.
  • The IR1250 is still small in size, with a nice large display and the same easy to use software as other Animas pumps.

Our Verdict

Animas offer a great range of pumps. The IR1000 is looking a little dated now, but still offers great features that you still don't see on some of the latest insulin pumps, like being truely waterproof. Moving up, the IR1250 is fully featured and state of the art, a joy to use. All Animas insulin pumps come with great customer support and aftersales programmes.

Why not compare to The Cozmo pump...
