MiniMed Insulin Pumps

MiniMed have a long history in Insulin Pump design and can rightly claim to of offered the first insulin pump on the market - in 1983! Since that time, through a strong focus on R&D, MiniMed have continued to offer great innovative products and according to a recent Goldman Sachs report, are the Number 1 provider of prescription Insulin Pumps in the US.

The Company continues with its R&D focus and has set itself the goal of introducing the first artificial pancreas to the market in the next few years.

The Paradigm 515 Insulin Pump

The 515 is the updated and improved successor to the extremely popular 512 Insulin Pump:
  • Large clear display.
  • Menu system makes it easy to setup and use.
  • Personal reminder alarms to alert you to check your blood glucose.
  • Small size weights only 100grammes fully loaded.
  • Takes a 176 units of insulin
  • Insulin Dose wizard recommends dose level after you have input your meal size and current blood glucose levels
  • Can automatically receive blood glucose readings from the Paradigm Link® Blood Glucose Monitor (powered by BD Logic™ Technology)
  • New PC and web based Therapy software to help you better manage your treatment.

Our Verdict

A good all round pump, easy to use, robust and backed by over 20 years of experience. However it is not waterproof and doesn't take standard infusion sets. Due to the use Radio Frequency transmission, you would not be able to automatically transfer blood glucose readings on an airplane. If any of these negatives concern you, consider the Cozmo instead.

The Paradigm 715 Insulin Pump

The 715 is in turn an update of the previous Paradigm 712 Insulin Pump

  • The 715 and the 515 share all the same features.
  • The 715 has a larger insulin reservoir capacity of 300 units - or it can take 176 units.
  • The 715 is slightly larger due to the increased insulin reservoir. The pump measures 2.0” x 3.6” x 0.8”
  • Keypad lock to prevent accidental key presses.
  • Display backlight
  • View a months worth of dose information, glucose levels and carbohydrate intake on screen.

Our Verdict

The 715 is virtually identical to the 515 apart from the capacity and size difference, this is a great pump and will be as popular as the 712 it supersedes.
