Omnipod™

The Omnipod is brought to you by the Insulet Corporation. The Omnipod is the first real innovation in the Insulin Pump market for many years. It first received 510(k) clearance from the FDA on January 3rd, 2005.

The Omnipod eliminates the need for tubing to connect to the infusion set and incorporates a blood glucose meter into the pod controller. So you only have to carry the PDM, which looks like a PDA! If discretion is what you are after - the Pod is slim and easily hidden under clothing and as the PDM is not physically connected to the Pod, its easy to hide in a handbag or jacket pocket.

Omnipod says their product "Has no strings attached™" and the wireless link is what sets it apart in the market. According to their research, 96% of their customers would recommend the Omnipod to a friend!

Our Verdict

A major innovation in the market. The PDM itself can be some distance away from the Omnipod, so you can leave it on your desk or worktop and walk around freely. As can be seen from the image below, the Omnipod is small and it is lightweight. The PDM offers a fully featured set of controls and programs.

The initial cost is lower than some pumps, but beware, as Insulet Corporation are currently the only people to offer spares and accessories for this product at the moment, running costs may be higher than a standard pump.
