Diabetes Product Reviews

Bayer / Ascensia

The Ascensia range of blood glucose meters start with meters that are so easy to use - they have no buttons! to the Breeze and Dex meters that have multiple test strips preloaded.

All meters except the most basic are compatible with the GLUCOFACTS® PC software, which allows you to keep a logbook, produce charts and graphs and can produce data suitable to fax or email to your care team.

Ascensia Elite and Elite XL

  • Ultimate in simplicity - no buttons.
  • 20 reading memory
  • Accurate results
  • Small blood sample required
  • Quick to use
  • Elite XL version include a button to access up to 120 previous readings and 14 day average
  • Elite XL can be connected to a PC to download meter readings.

Our Verdict

For those that want no frills, or cannot cope with buttons to press. The ultimate in ease of use, push the test strip in and it switches on ready to be used. The Elite XL offers a little more in the way of features, but we prefer the look of the OneTouch Ultra.

Ascensia Contour

  • No test strip coding required.
  • Automatically controls the temperature to help ensure an accurate reading.
  • Underfilling of the test strip is detected and a warning given.
  • 240 reading memory.
  • Connects to a PC with GLUCOFACTS®
  • Fast results - in 15 seconds
  • Can be used on multiple test sites, like the forearm, abdomen or thigh.

Our Verdict

A neat little meter with all the essential features you expect. More stylish than the Elite and the automatic coding and temperature control are good extras to save you having to think about.

Ascensia Breeze

  • Unique to Ascensia - AUTODISC® - preload the meter with 10 test strips.
  • Auto coding
  • Auto underfill detection
  • 100 reading memory
  • Connects to a PC with GLUCOFACTS®
  • Comfortable shape fits snugly in the palm of your hand.
  • As with the Contour - it can be used on multiple test sites.

Ascensia DEX® 2

  • The DEX® 2 is extremely similar to the Breeze. Please see the feature list above for details.
  • Slide down cover protects the display when not in use.

Our Verdict

Both the Breeze and the DEX® 2 are very convenient to load thanks to the pack of ten test strips, which are then very easy to select, use and dispose of. Nice design and easy to use. The choice between the two just comes down to personal preference. We prefer the look of the Breeze, but the slide cover on the DEX® 2 protects the display - which could be useful.
