TheraSense/MediSense Freestyle and Precision Range

TheraSense / MediSense, part of Abbott Laboratories, currently make three products. The Freestyle® is a standard (but very stylish) glucose meter. The Precision Xtra™ is a dual meter, able to test both blood glucose and ketones. The Freestyle Flash™ is a tiny blood glucose meter, for those who like to be discreet when testing.

Abbott also make the CoZmonitor™ - the integrated blood glucose monitor that works with the Deltec Cozmo Insulin Pump

Can be used on certain areas of the arms and legs as well as the fingers.

Our Verdict

Beautifully styled, easy to hold and handle. Clear to use and with comprehensive warnings. The Freestyle™ is a great all round meter. PC software is also available, the Freestyle CoPilot™.

Precision Xtra™

With the ability to test ketones as well as glucose, this is a useful addition to the MediSense range.

Can measure Beta-Ketones (useful if you are ill or your medical team determine it is necessary to test).

Large, clear display.

Audible sounds tell you when a reading is ready.

Backlight button.

Readings in either mg/dl or mmol/l.

Forward and Back keys make reviewing old results easy.

"Lo" warning if your reading is below 20 (1.1)

Our Verdict

The ability to measure Ketones is what sets this meter apart from others. Ketone levels can be important to measure if you are ill, or perhaps if you are pregnant and want to track you Ketone levels. Overall this is a nice looking and very functional meter.
