Diabetic Travel Tips and Travel Insurance

Traveling and vacations should be fun times, but as a diabetic, if disaster strikes and you are not prepared, the consequences can be terrible. Getting travel insurance is one of the most important steps you should take.

Some standard travel insurance policies do not cover any claims arising from preexisting medical conditions. You MUST inform your insurance company that you are a diabetic and check what restrictions they apply.

Essential Travel Tips

  • To avoid problems with security checks, get a Doctor's note, confirming your requirement for needles and medication.
  • If flying, never put medication in the hold, always keep it as hand luggage. The hold can get very cold and may affect your insulin.
  • Take extra insulin - ideally at least double and split it into two or more packages, giving some to a travel companion to carry.
  • Take extra test strips and consider a spare test meter if you have one.
  • Wear an ID medical bracelet.
  • Take snacks to treat a hypo and for the inevitable delays
  • Carry insulin in suitable thermally protective cases.

Getting Really Prepared!

  • Avoid walking barefoot on hot sand or rocks.
  • Warmer climates may mean you need less insulin
  • Colder climates sometimes demand more insulin is required.
  • Never allow insulin to freeze, generally take it out of the special thermally protective carry case when transferred to a fridge.
  • Remember, extremes of temperature can affect blood test meters, keep them in their recommended temperature range.
  • Take anti-sickness and anti-diarrhoea tablets and any other common medication you think you may need.
