Safe Driving Tips and Diabetic Car Insurance
Most diabetics need to drive in order to get to shops, work, schools
and much more. If you need to drive for your job and you have just found
out you have diabetes, don't panic you can still drive in most situations.
Actual limitations vary from country to country, check with the relevant
authority.
There are a few things diabetic drivers should be aware of to make sure
you drive as safely as possible. Diabetes can have short term effects
(like Hypos) and longer
term effects as discussed in the Complications
section. You need be aware of both and take sensible precautions:
Essential Driving Tips
- Always carry a sugary snack or non diet soda to treat a hypo
- If you think you are having a hypo, pull over straight away and test
yourself. Treat any hypo and wait 15 to 20 minutes at least before retesting
your glucose levels. If your levels are in a good range, you should
then eat something more, perhaps a higher protein small meal
- If you suffer from longer term complications like eye disease or
neuropathy, you must get regularly checked by your health care team
to assess your driving ability.
- If you have trouble feeling if you are having a hypo, it is not advisable
to drive, as you risk blacking out or suddenly being unable to focus
of concentrate properly. Your health team can help you watch for the
hypo warning signs which will help you.
- You must tell your car insurance company as soon as you develop diabetes,
otherwise your cover may not be valid.
- Some companies will not cover diabetics, but plenty do.
- If you find your car insurance premiums go up and you have well controlled
diabetes, tell you insurance company and if they won't treat you fairly,
move company!
